The inspiration for "Kakawin" came to me while I was guiding cultural canoe tours one summer. My family crest is the kakawin (aka orca whale) and qwayatsik (wolf), who shapeshift one to the other. I was hoping to see Kakawin while canoeing on the ocean but was not having the same luck as the other canoe guides were having. I wrote the song to honour and show appreciation for these creatures.
Then one day I was in my late grandma's home territory of Heshquiaht, with a Nuuchahnulth language learning cohort, paddling in Heshquiaht harbour. I was in a canoe with my grandpa Levi who is also my language mentor. As a group, we were way up the harbour heading for the river. The water was calm and peaceful. I had just finished singing this song when I saw a huge splash out of the corner of my eye. It was a Kakawin mamma with her little ones in tow. It took us all by surprise because there had been no sign of them until they were right there in the air near us.
My grandpa Levi is featured in the track talking in Nuuchahnulth language about these two creatures in their elements and shapeshifting.

Tanya Tagaq got me drooling for throat-singing in just about any form, and this Piqsiq in particular gave me exactly what I wanted. Such beautiful voices. Richard Weems
